Objectives

BACKGROUND - FONTYS IN NUMBERS: Fontys is a University of Applied Sciences with around 43.000 students and 5.000 staff members. Our University has a decentral organisational structure with 23 schools offering 130 degrees in a wide range of areas. In total, we provide education in six cities located in regions that border with Belgium and Germany. As many Dutch Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) we foresee a decrease in our student population. It already decreased, from 45.000 during call 2021 to 43.000 during call 2023. The student numbers for the current academic year have not been published yet, but we do expect another decrease. The main reason for this is the demographic development where there are less people in a student-age in our regions of Brabant and Limburg. Furthermore, this demographic development also happens in Belgium and Germany, where also a group of our student population resides. BACKGROUND - ERASMUS+ AT FONTYS IN NUMBERS: Interestingly the Erasmus+ mobility population has not decreased. We are working hard to make a contra movement against the decreasing student population numbers, and to have a larger percentage of students taking part in an Erasmus+ mobility. Our goal that was set when we applied for this ECHE is to have 1000 student and 350 staff mobilities per academic year by the end of this programme period. Since the start of this programme the mobility numbers increased, so relatively more students of Fontys take part in an Erasmus+ mobility, if you look at the decreasing total student population. The short-term mobilities and inclusion top-up are a large contributor to this movement. We are attracting a new category of students that before would not get an Erasmus+ scholarship. With this project we wanted to achieve to spend all the budget, we got very close to spending 100% and tried by moving some budget around and optimizing the number of students and staff that we could allocated to call 2022, to reach this high percentage of spending. Spending the budget does not go without efforts. We implemented the novelties in our Mobility Online software and communicate and disseminate about the project possibilities. Amongst student, teachers, support staff and management. OBJECTIVES: Fontys wants to be an institution that ‘inspires growth through support and challenges’ and strives to be an educational organisation where students can grow and learn to think more laterally. Our strategy, "Fontys for Society" aims to achieve its objectives by offering support and challenges to our students. Internationalisation is an essential element in this strategy. Gaining Intercultural and international competences are part of the output that Fontys wants to deliver to society. Erasmus+ KA131 mobilities are key to reach this goal. Fontys aims to give students and staff the opportunity to develop themselves as internationally oriented professionals by providing (staff) exchange opportunities through a solid network of international partners and placement opportunities at organisations and training institutions. That is also why we set this goal for 1000 student mobilities and 350 staff mobilities per academic year by the end of this Erasmus+ programme period. Especially for the last one we will have quite some work to do. This is a nice objective for the coming years. IMPACT: Why do we want to do all of this? We want our students to have an impactful Erasmus+ experience to better prepare them for society because we see in the region we live in, where large companies like ASML in Veldhoven have a big impact on our local economy and community. Our students will work and live in this community, and they will have to deal with international neighbours and colleagues. Our nursing and psychology students will have to help expats and immigrants, our future teachers of the Fontys PABO teaching academy have a classroom with children from different backgrounds, our economists will work in offices with international colleagues and our ICT students need to open up for new people and rapidly changing environment with wicked problems. If we let them study at Fontys without any international experience, they are one step behind. Even if it is an internationalisation at home or short-term period abroad supported by Erasmus+ (or not) it can make a significant difference in their future lives. This impact will not only be felt by the graduating student, but also by the people in their surrounding and local and regional communities.
