Our overarching aim was to develop narrative based education in order to support nurse assistants, welfare professionals, therapist, medical doctors, and neuropsychologyst in approaching person centred care. We did so by 1) designing a training together with primarily nurse assistants, welfare professionals and in cooperation with (para)medical staff (therapist, medical doctors, and neuropsychologist) including the use of co-creation techniques 2) develop, implement, and provide a personalised narrative-based training and 3) evaluating the provided training in order to further personalised narrative-based education by enabling the model to be adjusted to different contexts, needs, and learning objectives for vocational education and training. It fostered both the inclusion of these vocationally trained staff and further developed narrative education. The insights and project outputs are available on our website in four different languages (Dutch, Catalan, Spanish, and English) in order to be accessible for other institutions providing or developing vocational education to healthcare professionals.
We applied for this project to provide a narrative-based educational format to foster person-centred care practices among nursing assistants, therapist, medical doctors, neuropsychologyst, and welfare professionals working at healthcare institutions providing long-term care. This format allows to move beyond the medical records of older adults to understand what they still value regarding their welfare and care through the stories they tell. Moreover, both nursing assistants and welfare professionals working at healthcare centres are seen as difficult to train, assumed to not need their training in terms of everyday realities and there is not a lot of opportunity for vocational training for these professionals. In addition, most of the training they usually follow does not fit neither their day-to-day challenges nor their time restrictions. The developed training activities aimed at overcoming both barriers. We aimed to reach 40 persons with our training.
