The main objective of the project was to reconnect children with nature by nurturing their Nature Intelligence (NQ)—a multidimensional concept that includes emotional, cognitive, and spiritual connection to the natural world. We aimed to develop a nature-based pedagogical vision and practical tools to integrate NQ into formal school education. Specifically, the project sought to (1) adapt the existing NQ competency framework for use with schoolchildren, (2) co-create and test an NQ-inspired pedagogy, and (3) support schools in embedding NQ into their curriculum through collaborative action research. By doing so, we aimed to improve the quality and inclusiveness of school education, promote children’s well-being, and foster sustainable values and behaviors from an early age. The project also aimed to empower teachers with training and resources to support this approach and promote long-term, systemic change across European schools.
Many children across Europe spend most of their time indoors at school, leading to a growing disconnection from nature and a loss of local, land-based knowledge. While environmental education often takes place outside the classroom through one-off activities, few schools embed nature into their everyday teaching. This project addresses the need for a more holistic, structured, competency based and inclusive approach to environmental education by introducing the concept of Nature Intelligence (NQ). NQ supports children’s cognitive, emotional, and spiritual connection to nature, helping them grow into healthy, responsible citizens who care for the planet. Our aim was to develop a nature-based pedagogical vision and practical tools to integrate NQ into school curricula, teacher training, and learning environments. The project responds to clear needs identified by schools, educators, and researchers across Europe for a competency framework and highly practical pedagogical approach that supports nature-connected learning and contributes to both individual well-being and long-term environmental responsibility.
