Objectives

The project team was deeply disturbed by the alarming increase in racist and xenophobic sentiment, violence, and discrimination during the Covid-19 pandemic, as reported by Human Rights Watch. The project team consisted of international group of young people who met on another youth exchange - EU&YOU, implemented in/ May 2021 in Bulgaria. They were particularly concerned about the targeting of minority groups, people of different religions and cultures, skin color, ethnicity, and other marginalized groups with hate speech and online harassment. As group of young people and activists dedicated to protecting human rights, they witnessed the detrimental impact of these harmful sentiments on their peers and communities. They recognized that young people, in particular, were vulnerable to online harassment and hate due to easy access to social media and a lack of media literacy and education on the topic. With the project we aimed to raise awareness among young people about the violations of human rights caused by hate speech and cyberbullying. They wanted to provide participants with knowledge and tools to combat these issues in a non-violent manner and empower them to report online hate speech. The team also saw the importance of promoting media literacy, analytical, and critical thinking skills among young people to help them navigate and counteract harmful online narratives. They believed that art, particularly graffiti and storytelling, could be effective non-violent means to protect human rights and raise awareness about social issues. The main objectives of the project were: • -Raising awareness among young people about hate speech and cyberbullying as violations of human rights. • -Informing participants about non-violent ways to combat cyberbullying and hate speech and providing channels to report online. • -Promoting media literacy, analytical, and critical thinking skills. • -introducing participant and Highlighting art, particularly graffiti and storytelling, as effective non-violent means to protect human rights. • -Encouraging civic participation among young people and motivating them to be actively involved in the protection of human rights through art
