Objectives

We have had a couple of objectives for the project, which all has been done very well. EMPOWERING NEEDS: The primary goal of this project was to empower young people in highly disadvantaged positions NEEDS. ’ We aimed to change this through our project. We translated this objective by encouraging young girls to think about what they wanted to visit and discuss their insecurities during the preparation phase, where they planned the entire project themselves. Additionally, we elevated their community, which often holds them back, by providing a pathway as influencers and changemakers. This showcased their ability to travel independently, marketing the project as a unique social initiative and inspiration for other organizations. INCREASE INDEPENDENCE AND INCREASE THE ABILITY TO LEARN: We aimed to increase the independence of young people, enabling them to take care of themselves. Traveling without immediate support from family or familiar surroundings forced the girls to rely on themselves and each other. This experience significantly enhanced their problem-solving skills and boosted their confidence in handling new situations and most of all <situational awareness>. Additionally, traveling through all of Europe's climate zones helped the young girls navigate unfamiliar environments, teaching them adaptability and resilience. For instance, in Sweden, it was -40 degrees, requiring them to schedule coffee breaks and assist each other with their luggage. In contrast, in the Cilento Region in Campania (Pisciotta), they relied on each other's physical strength to carry luggage and used the garden of their Airbnb for fruits and vegetables, which enhanced their ability to learn from their environment. INCREASE MATHEMATICAL AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCES: Participants needed to make their own maths, as well use CANVA, ADOBE and Excel, so the goal here was really to increase their technical competences, because they used this tool all the time. In addition, a further goal was to increase their ability to calculate, not only have we done this as we used different currencies (NO/SEK/EUR) but also participants needed to make calculations all the time to make sure they budget, for instance they needed to make decision’s when deciding what they wanted to do as you can spend money only once. As these young girls from poor backgrounds do not normally have such much money, let alone travelmoney, it was a great way to preperare for adult life and can bolster the young girls ability to convince jobs or schools that they have the ‘startbekwaamheid’ in these competences. INCREASING EUROPEAN SOLIDARITY: The project sought to increase European solidarity by connecting young people from the Netherlands with other European youth. This was achieved through initiatives such as flyering, online promotion activities, and live interactions with young people in different towns. For instance, the girls invited local people to dinner, and those who followed our social media channels gained a better understanding of what it means to be European. European values of liberty, free press, multicultural identity, and progressive values were highlighted. PROMOTING GREEN EUROPE/SUSTAINABLE PRACTICE: This initiative promoted sustainability and sustainable living in various ways. Participants travelled only by train, demonstrating to themselves, the general public, and organizations informed of our results that train travel is a viable carbon-free alternative. The project also promoted vegan meals, home cooking instead of fast food, and utilizing natural resources around the locations visited. For example, rivers and sea streams that were polluted were cleaned while kayaking, promoting sustainable tourism. Sustainability was further promoted by reusing and upcycling all necessary materials and using digital means to communicate and store information (except when the internet was unavailable in the Arctic/South Italy). The project relied on cycling and walking instead of buses for commuting within cities, reducing the carbon footprint. ENHANCING YFM'S PRESENCE IN EUROPE AND GAINING NEW INSIGHTS THROUGH ERASMUS+ KEY ACTIONS This was the first time YFM participated in this key action, bringing us into contact with younger people than we typically coach and train. This was important as an increasing number of people will turn 18 in the coming years in the Netherlands. Additionally, the goal was to increase the value and know-how of our organization across Europe. This project provided an opportunity to gain new experiences with other organizations in Europe and collaborate for environmental initiatives.
