Objectives

1.Authentic language learning that inspires: We hope a week of language learning in Spain can - give the students authentic language experiences - make them cross the "threshold" of using the language more actively orally - make the Specialisation in General Studies programme more attractive to the youth of Kvinnherad - help students of non-Norwegian origin grasping the new - mayby fourth - language with more ease - give our native Norwegian students a greater understanding of what it is like to be in an environment where you do not understand the language so well, for more empathy with minority students 2. Broaden the students' minds by showing them the value of other cultures' (European/ Spanish) society and heritage 3. Support and reinforce the competence of the Spanish teachers

Background

The organisation is a school - vidaregåande skule, upper secondary school/ college. We are a mixed school with the programme area Specialisation in general studies (Studiespesialiserande) - the field of this application, as well as 4 different vocational programmes and 3 programmes for students with special needs. Only the programme for Specialisation in General Studies (Studiespesialiserande) offers a second foreign language. Contrary to most city schools in Norway, our recruitment to the vocational study programmes is dominant, whereas we need to strengthen the recruitment to the general studies and higher education in our area. Learning a second foreign language is often regarded as a burden, not a benefit, and we want to change that attitude by strengthening the learning of Spanish by giving more authentic language experiences, thus maybe making the General studies programme more attractive. We wish to broaden the minds and opportunities for our students. Being provincial, we would like to give our students the opportunity to experience a different society, as well as cultural treasures that we lack here. 11 of our students have origins other than Norwegian. An aim is also to create a more inclusive environment for them.
