The project planned to bring young people together to discuss current European issues and develop their own proposals for action. Based on the EU Youth Report and discussions and surveys held with youth and stakeholders in the 38 countries of the European Youth Parliament, we identified the following issues as current core challenges faced by the youth in Europe: youth unemployment, apathy, unwillingness and inability to contribute to society, lack of intercultural competences, issues in formal education, lack of a platform for expressing one’s opinions, and the exclusivity of educational opportunities. Furthermore, young people are lacking access to physical spaces where they can meet like-minded youth, explore, learn from each other, and foster their personal growth. This is at a time when Europe more than ever needs more cohesive and inclusive societies, which allow citizens and empower youth to play an active role in decision-making processes and society. We believe that non-formal, informal, and peer-to-peer learning experiences can help address these issues. This project set out to organise a youth exchange event in a parliamentary setting, gathering 200 participants from 40 different countries and social backgrounds. The project planned to bring young people together to discuss current European issues, put forward their own proposals, and reflect on societal problems, and ways to engage with them beyond the project. Moreover, the project planned to facilitate cultural and social exchange, allowing the participants to get to know each other and build bridges across the continent. The project aimed to reach the following objectives, all falling in line with the 11 youth goals as set up by the European Commission: Enable dialogue between young people and decision-makers (Youth Goal 1): The project was designed to enable an active dialogue with high-level decision-makers from the political sphere, with influential figures from the academic, cultural, and corporate world as well as from Civil Society, inspiring the participants for active citizenship. Promote young people’s active citizenship and democratic participation (Youth Goal 4): participants were to learn about their own position in the world as Europeans and from the European perspective, current societal challenges, and how they can contribute to the future they would like to see. Encourage young people to take action (Youth Goal 9): Participants were to gain in-depth knowledge on pressing societal issues and discuss potential solutions to be implemented on all levels, realising their power and potential as individual citizens. Develop soft skills that enhance employability, improving learning performance (Youth Goal 7): Through the methodology of this project, participants had to learn by doing and through non-formal education methods, improving their skills in researching, critical thinking, creative problem solving, public speaking, teamwork, networking, intercultural dialogue, formulating and defending personal positions on complex issues, understanding and accepting other opinions, and compromising. Empower young people and boost self-confidence (Youth Goal 9): dispelling the myth that young people are not capable of dealing with challenges facing the world, participants were to be empowered and realise their potential as active citizens. Getting to converse and debate topics traditionally reserved for adults, in a foreign language, in a multicultural team, and presenting ideas to a group of hundreds of young people, increases participants’ self-esteem. Feedback was also used and encouraged. Get young people comfortable with speaking in a foreign language: by immersing young people in a multicultural environment, where everyone communicates in a foreign language, participants were to become more comfortable speaking in English. Promote intercultural understanding (Youth Goal 3): by promoting the development of solidarity and tolerance among young people in Europe, by favouring intercultural dialogue and supporting the active fight against discrimination, in particular against racism and xenophobia. Through intercultural activities, the participants could develop positive experiences with cultural diversity, thus aiding the implementation of Youth Goal 3. Introduce participants to volunteering (Youth Goal 9): The EYP is built upon the principle of volunteering - young people are active in carrying out activities for other young people and thus act as role models for voluntary action. Supporting the EU Youth Strategy and enabling access for young people to cross-border mobility opportunities, this project was to offer participants, also those who face obstacles or have fewer opportunities, opportunities for continued volunteering. Our project aimed to prepare the participants for active democratic participation and enable them to acquaint themselves and engage with various topics of concern for today’s society.
