Objectives

"NEO - North-East Observations" is an initiative designed by young people from Central and Eastern Europe in order to direct the attention of European audiences to the uniqueness of the multicultural history of this part of the continent. Activities planned as part of the project took place mainly in Warmia and Mazury - a unique area where developed social mechanisms for the peaceful coexistence of various cultural and ethnic minorities can be an important material for promoting intercultural dialogue in Europe. The main goal of the project was to organize innovative photography and film workshops in a unique cultural environment, allowing for creative use of the potential of undiscovered and unknown spaces of Warmia and Mazury among young people from countries whose fates are intertwined around the complicated history of this region (Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine). The idea of the project - consisting in the implementation of an international youth exchange, presenting the complexity of European history on the example of Warmia and Mazury, arose as part of informal discussions conducted by youth leaders and young creators of culture associated in individual partner organizations, who met in 2020 during the international film festival WAMA Film Festival in Olsztyn. The task of the project was to learn about the common cultural heritage of Central and Eastern Europe, to overcome artificial barriers set by state borders, to counteract social exclusion (including economic exclusion affecting talented young people from families with a difficult financial situation) and to animate creative activities aimed at building an open society aware of its role in the European community. One of the goals of the project was also to document and spread knowledge about the unique character of Warmia and Mazury as a place that is an excellent example of peaceful coexistence of cultural minorities and to remind the inhabitants of Europe about the vanishing, extremely valuable tangible and intangible heritage of this area. Warmia and Mazury are a unique space with an autonomous cultural specificity and local identity. In this region, the identity threads are important because before World War II it was very diverse in terms of culture, and after the war - as a result of political decisions and changes in Poland's borders - significant demographic changes took place here. More than 70,000 people left their homes to emigrate to Germany. At the same time, settlers from central Poland, displaced persons from the former Eastern Borderlands, Ukrainian and Lemko settlers, as well as smaller ethnic groups, such as Lithuanians and Belarusians, were arriving here. As a result of demographic changes, there was a rapid contact of the native population and post-migration communities from geographically and culturally distant areas. Nevertheless, with time, a coherent social structure was created in this area, devoid of deeper antagonisms and national conflicts. As part of the project, young people researched the unique history of this region and analyzed the social processes accompanying historical events. The implementation of activities based on attractive audiovisual tools was aimed at awakening young people's interest in the multicultural history of Warmia and Mazury, which allowed to save the valuable tradition of these areas from oblivion and integrate participants around the search for manifestations of national cultures in the universal heritage of the region. The project made it possible to present the specificity of this part of Europe to the inhabitants of Western Europe, helped to understand the complexity of local history and indicated positive sources of inspiration. An important goal of the project was to document the deteriorating material heritage of Warmia and Mazury, which requires care and information and promotion activities. As a result of the project, photographic series and short film etudes were created, which are an artistic interpretation of selected themes from the history of Warmia and Mazury and the fate of the local society functioning at the junction of Polish, Lithuanian and Ukrainian cultures. The project was a new and original voice on the currently widely discussed topic of migration. As part of the project - by referring to universal historical contexts - threads regarding cultural diversity within Europe were analyzed and an attempt was made to define the conditions for effective integration of social groups diverse in terms of, among others, culture, religion and tradition. On the one hand, the project promoted the unique cultural heritage of Warmia and Mazury, and on the other hand, it served to disseminate universal social values developed in this region and which could be an example for the entire united Europe, torn by ethnic conflicts.
