Objectives

The implementation of the project was preceded by a collaborative analysis of local, national and transnational activities for sustainable development goals in partner organisations from Azerbaijan, Estonia, France, Georgia, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands and Turkey. At that time, we came to the conclusion that a key need was to increase the knowledge of youth workers in order to have a strong and positive impact, especially in the context of smart city development. Our project 'Smart Youth for smart cities' (SY4SC), was a support for the professional development of youth workers, improving the quality of their work and developing their organisational capacities by expanding their competences. Partners drew on each other's wealth of experience to emphasise international solidarity, self-confidence and trigger self-reflection in youth work. Participants were everyday and active youth workers who acquired skills to run original trainings and workshops for young people. The partners drew on each other's wealth of experience to emphasise international solidarity, self-confidence and trigger self-reflection in youth work. Participants not only acquired design skills, but also excelled in the effective management of self-designed initiatives, thereby increasing youth engagement with the Sustainable Development Goals. They also practised how to promote inclusion and mutual respect in relation also to the wider community and beyond. The project was a response to the challenges of a growing urban population. As such, participants acquired competences to prepare for life in the cities of the future. What activities should be promoted, what social competences will foster the building of smart cities, how to co-create, use infrastructure, environmentally friendly and accessible to all. The project to prepare for living in smart communities will influence the quality of life of citizens and reduce the ecological footprint of cities, ultimately contributing to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG11 on sustainable cities and communities. The project was a continuation of previous projects: the K205 partnership 'SDGs and eco entrepreneurship education in youth work' (2019-2021), which was awarded the 'Good practice' badge, and the KA1 project '4A - Analyse-act-attract-achieve: Sustainable Development Goals in youth work' (2020-2021). After analysing the results of the projects and the needs of of the partner organisations, we decided to implement a new KA1 project focusing on smart cities. The objectives of the implemented project included: -providing young employees with competences regarding the implementation of sustainable development goals, - exploring the phenomenon of smart cities, - fostering skills in using the various tools to promote smart city ideas, - developing competences in working with young people with fewer opportunities in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals -and to develop non-formal education and cooperation in the field of youth work with EU and partner countries. The partners in this project aimed to gather and exchange good practices with youth organisations in the European Union, as well as from the Caucasus and Turkey, in order to gain more and differentiated knowledge in the area of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and engaging youth. EUROPEA Poland, as the initiator and coordinating organisation, drew on knowledge and experience from previous projects and network activities to best implement the next new project. Members of each organisation expressed the need to share their knowledge, skills and competences while learning from their partners.
