The genesis of our project was rooted in a deep-seated concern over the escalating sedentariness among youth, a trend exacerbated by the far-reaching effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing upon the World Health Organization's (WHO) sobering statistics, which underscored the dire consequences of insufficient physical activity—ranking as one of the foremost risk factors for premature mortality globally—we were spurred into action. WHO's revelation that more than 80% of the world's adolescent population failed to meet recommended activity levels served as a clarion call for proactive intervention. The contemporary landscape of youth lifestyles presented a stark departure from previous generations, marked by an increasingly sedentary trajectory, particularly evident among children and adolescents in their formative years. With the onset of the pandemic, the situation was further compounded, as lockdown measures forced young individuals into extended periods of indoor confinement, relegating physical activity to the periphery of their daily routines. The pervasive influence of digital devices and passive forms of entertainment further entrenched sedentary behaviors, engendering a generational shift towards a lifestyle characterized by prolonged screen time and limited physical exertion. Against this backdrop, outdoor activities emerged as a beacon of hope, offering a holistic antidote to the sedentary epidemic afflicting today's youth. Far more than mere recreational pursuits, outdoor endeavors encompassed a rich tapestry of physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional benefits, vital for nurturing resilient and well-rounded individuals. From fostering physical fitness and motor skills to instilling values of teamwork and environmental stewardship, the multifaceted nature of outdoor experiences served as a crucible for personal growth and self-discovery. Moreover, outdoor activities held intrinsic potential as a potent instrument for fostering social inclusion, particularly among marginalized youth cohorts. As conduits for meaningful social interactions and cultural exchange, outdoor experiences transcended societal barriers, providing a level playing field for forging lasting bonds and fostering a sense of belonging. However, despite their inherent promise, the widespread closure of outdoor organizations and programs in the wake of the pandemic dealt a severe blow to youth engagement and social cohesion, underscoring the urgent need for targeted intervention. In light of these challenges, our project endeavored to harness the transformative power of outdoor activities in promoting youth inclusion and well-being. At its core lay a commitment to equipping youth workers and educators with the requisite knowledge and competencies to leverage outdoor settings as dynamic platforms for experiential learning and social integration. Through a multifaceted approach encompassing capacity building, experiential learning, and knowledge dissemination, our project sought to empower practitioners to spearhead a paradigm shift in youth work practices, where outdoor activities served as catalysts for positive change and community resilience. Objectives: 1. Enhanced the competencies of youth workers and educators in utilizing outdoor activities as a transformative tool for fostering inclusion and healthier lifestyles among youth. 2. Developed the empathetic understanding and needs assessment skills of youth workers and educators to better serve the diverse needs of their target groups, thereby promoting a more inclusive approach to youth engagement. 3. Facilitated the design, prototyping, and testing of innovative outdoor activities that promoted inclusion within local communities, with an emphasis on empowering youth to co-create and lead such initiatives. 4. Strengthened the capacity of youth workers and educators to engage young people in the development of Erasmus+ projects centered on inclusive outdoor experiences, thereby fostering international collaboration and knowledge exchange. 5. Compiled and disseminated a comprehensive guidebook featuring best practices and experiential insights on developing inclusive outdoor activities, serving as a valuable resource for youth workers and organizations worldwide. In pursuit of these objectives, our project adopted a structured and iterative approach, comprising training courses, local implementation stages, and collaborative seminars, aimed at fostering a culture of innovation and inclusivity within the youth work sector. By empowering practitioners to harness the transformative potential of outdoor activities, we aspired to catalyze a ripple effect of positive change, where every young person had the opportunity to thrive and flourish in a supportive and inclusive environment.
