Through this project, the partner organisations aimed to empower teachers and students by enhancing mathematical literacy and 21st-century skills, especially digital competence. We sought to improve the quality and relevance of math education by introducing innovative, blended approaches that connected mathematics to real-life contexts, e.g. cooking, sightseeing. By focusing on students aged 13-17, particularly those in disadvantaged or remote areas, we engaged them in solving real-world problems using maths. Our approach included enhancing teachers’ professional development through international cooperation and the exchange of best practices, allowing them to adopt diverse strategies that supported students’ mathematical understanding. The project involved transnational partnerships to share innovative methods, create sets of activities to use innovation in Math and tackle Math-related stress, support teacher and student mobility, and create a supportive, digitally rich learning environment. Ultimately, our goal was to strengthen the long-term educational capacity and internationalization of our institutions, benefiting both the students and the wider community.
We applied for the “Empowering Math Literacy Skills of Learners Through Innovative Digital Tools“ project to address the urgent need of the partner organisations to improve mathematical literacy and digital competence among both teachers and students, particularly those from disadvantaged areas. The partner organisation countries' low success rates in mathematical literacy (PISA 2018) underscore the importance of this initiative. In PISA 2018, Turkey, Poland, Spain, and Portugal showed below-average Mathematical literacy scores. Poland scored highest among them, yet all still displayed a need to strengthen math skills and applications. By combining innovative digital tools with real-world Math applications, we have aimed to increase students' engagement and problem-solving skills, essential for success in the modern, tech-driven world. This project’s goal was also to foster collaboration across European schools, promote inclusion, and empower teachers with new strategies, benefiting our communities with enhanced teaching quality and student outcomes.
