Objectives

In recent years, breast cancer has been the most common type of cancer among Polish women (25% of all cancer cases) and European women (29%). Personal experiences and observations of our surroundings have exposed the shortcomings and needs of individuals facing a health crisis. Therefore, we decided to respond with tailored solutions. Our goal was to provide support by developing educational tools that would facilitate a faster return to health and work after illness, incorporating international experiences. On one hand, this aimed to enhance the competencies of staff in partner organizations and encourage the exchange of best practices. On the other hand, it sought to create a professional support and education base addressing the most frequently recurring needs of breast cancer survivors. In summary, the project primarily aimed to strengthen partner organizations and provide comprehensive support for women after breast cancer treatment. It addressed their needs related to psychological rehabilitation, rebuilding self-esteem, social integration, and health education. Through this support, women can regain confidence and better cope with the challenges that life after illness presents.

Background

From Amazons to Glamazons addresses the need for psychological support and empowerment among women who have experienced cancer. The idea emerged from our collaboration with the Słupsk Amazons Association. Meetings and workshops revealed gaps in the Polish healthcare system and highlighted the specific needs of women in this situation. This led us to consider what could be done to address these issues and whether similar challenges exist in other countries. When we presented the idea to a partner organization in France, they showed great interest and willingness to collaborate. Our goal was to provide women with support, help them regain balance, rebuild self-confidence, and find the strength to continue their recovery journey. Our needs analysis showed that women after cancer often struggle with body image issues, low self-esteem, and social isolation. Many patients feel excluded and inadequate. The project name is also meaningful—Amazons symbolize strength and independence, while Glamazons represent women who, despite difficulties, maintain their beauty, femininity, and confidence. This highlights their agency, showing that they can be an inspiration to others and rediscover their inner strength.
