Objectives

By implementing BoysLingo project, its partners wanted to contribute to promoting comprehensive approaches to Language teaching and learning, supporting at the same time the purposeful use of digital technologies in education and building the capacity of educators and school leaders through needs-based teaching methods. In particular, project activities were targeted to encourage and motivate boys to be engaged in Language Learning activities (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening) in their education; to build the capacity of educators, school leaders, and school staff in organizing and implementing language learning activities in the classroom with the use of digital tools, such as a gamified mobile learning environment; to engage teachers in the development process of the learning scenarios and activities in order to acquire the knowledge and competences required to support students during the learning process; and to develop innovative quality learning material and digital resources for Language learning in primary and secondary education.

Background

BoysLingo project stemmed from the fact, supported by many international studies, including Pisa (2018), that boys seem to opt-out and underachieve compared to girls in language learning. The possible problem for this cause was identified in the current education systems approaches of teaching literacy and language generally. Thus, the project’s main purpose was to bring all students (with a specific focus on boys) closer to the language lesson and improve their skills by providing meaningful language activities using mobile technologies. This approach addressed the gender discrimination in education and aimed to create inclusive educational environments. Indeed, a digital approach is more appropriate for the new generation, and its application has contributed to lead boys to become more motivated and empowered to engage in language learning activities. Moreover, the project also impacted teachers and educators with acquiring the knowledge and competences required to support students during the learning process when implementing language learning activities in the classroom, with the use of meaningful mobile technology, all with the goal of fostering an inclusive, interactive school experience capable of promoting equal education.
