We applied for this project because of the challenges that we noticed among youth. The pandemic intensified challenges faced by youth, particularly social isolation and learning difficulties, which led to a rapid decline in their mental health. Teens, already struggling with low self-esteem and psychological issues, were further impacted by uncoordinated online lessons and limited social interaction. This pushed them towards excessive social media use and unhealthy habits, worsening their self-confidence. Educators were also unprepared to support them effectively. Like reported UNICEF, nearly 19% of boys and over 16% of girls aged 15-19 in Europe suffer from mental health disorders, with depression and anxiety being the most common. The economic impact of these issues is severe, costing Europe an estimated EUR 50 billion annually in lost human capital. In addition, Europe is failing to meet its sustainability goals, with the environment at risk of irreversible damage. Our project addresses both the urgent need for youth mental health support and environmental action, making it crucial to implement now to counteract the negative effects of the post-pandemic world and ongoing global challenges.
