By implementing the project, the partnership aimed to support the European footwear sector in its transition towards Industry 5.0 by addressing skills gaps and preparing the workforce for upcoming industrial, digital and societal changes. The project set out to translate the Industry 5.0 principles into practical training solutions applicable to SME operating in real production environments. A key objective was to develop and test a structured training framework focused on digital, environmental, sustainability and market-related competences, aligned with the needs identified by industry stakeholders. The project also aimed to introduce innovative learning approaches, including the use of digital tools and immersive technologies, to increase engagement and facilitate knowledge transfer to different target groups. Another objective was to strengthen the capacity of VET providers to respond to evolving sectoral needs, by offering adaptable training content and assessment tools suitable for workers with different skill levels. Through pilot implementations and stakeholder involvement, the project sought to validate the relevance of the training approach and support its uptake beyond the partnership.
The project gives response to concrete challenges faced by the EU footwear industry during the transition towards Industry 5.0. The sector is mainly composed of SME, highly dependent on skilled labor, and increasingly exposed to pressures related to digitalization, sustainability requirements and global competition. These challenges are reinforced by an ageing workforce, difficulties in attracting young talent and the risk of losing critical know-how. Despite previous investments in Industry 4.0 technologies, evidence showed that the human dimension of this transition was not sufficiently addressed. Studies and sectoral consultations highlighted significant gaps in digital, green and transversal competences, particularly among shop-floor workers. Companies and training providers also reported a lack of training solutions aligned with real industrial needs. The project aimed to equip workers and future professionals with key competences linked to digital technologies, sustainability and market awareness, while supporting VET providers in adapting training approaches to a human-centric, resilient and sustainable industrial model.
