Objectives

The motivation for the development of the Youth says NO! to Gender Based Violence (YouNO! -GBV) project was that gender-based violence is an all-encompassing, EU-wide and severe problem with very profound impacts on individuals, families, communities and society at large, and it must be addressed. According to the EU Strategy for Gender Equality 2020-2025, the EU "is at the global forefront regarding gender equality (...) However, no Member State has achieved full gender equality, and progress is slow. Gender-based violence - or violence directed against a woman because she is a woman or which disproportionately affects women - remains one of the biggest challenges in our society and is deeply rooted in gender inequality (...). It remains insufficiently reported and continues to be ignored within and outside the EU." Also, according to this Strategy, in the EU, 33% of women have experienced physical and sexual violence, 22% have experienced violence from their partner, and 55% have experienced sexual harassment. We consider these figures to be unacceptable and to denote the gender inequality that is still rife in our society. Gender violence is one of the most blatant human rights violations; until it is eliminated, we cannot claim to live in a fair and equal society. Therefore, we consider it essential to implement high-quality and effective prevention projects aimed at young people, educating "boys and girls, from an early age, on gender equality, and encouraging the development of non-violent relationships" (E.U. Strategy for Gender Equality 2020-2025). Although these interventions generically make sense, since gender violence occurs in all contexts, we consider it essential to address them to young people who suffer from some obstacles that prevent them from enjoying empowerment, development and learning opportunities (young people with F.O.). Considering the social problem and the identified needs, we proposed to gather young people from different European countries, including young people with M.O. who, through this intercultural contact, carried out activities to promote the development of key competencies that were crucial to break these cycles of violence and, on the other hand, made them agents of change promotion on these issues. To achieve this overall objective, the YouNO! -GBV project used a participative approach, relying on the direct and close involvement of the young participants throughout the project life cycle and proposes the following specific objectives: - To make young people aware of the reality of gender violence and how gender inequalities perpetuate this issue; - To promote the development of key competencies that would allow young people to live healthy relationships, namely personal, social and learning-to-learn (according to the Reference Framework for Key Competences for Lifelong Learning) - To raise young people's awareness of the importance of their role as agents of social change in combating gender violence, with a particular focus on young boys; - To promote the development of critical competencies that would allow young people to positively influence their network of contacts and other stakeholders to combat gender violence: citizenship, entrepreneurship, digital, multilingual, cultural awareness and sensitivity (according to the Reference Framework for Key Competences for Lifelong Learning).
