Inclusion, promoting equality and non-discriminationPreventing early school leaving and failure in educationNew learning and teaching methods and approaches

Objectives

1) Fifteen members of the teaching staff from our school participated in a training course in Barcelona, Athens and Florence in order to develop their skills related to understanding the problems of students with special needs and the ways to get effective school inclusion in their cases. The teachers participating in the project improved their level of knowledge as regards the school and social integration of students with special needs. A workshop was organised, after each mobility, in which other colleagues from the school participated. 2) Each participant has created an educational intervention plan at the class level, two programmes adapted for children between 6 and 15 and a set of exercises with the aim of giving students with special needs the opportunity to learn at their own pace, according to their abilities and special needs. 3) There have been created two educational resources "Curriculum adapted to students with special needs" and "Models of differentiated work activities". The works have an ISBN and they were published by the Spiru Haret Publishing House in Iasi. 4) In order to improve communication with the parents of students with special needs, a parental training programme has been developed and implemented.

Background

"Vasile Conta" Secondary School in Iasi is an integrative educational institution that, starting with 2004, annually receives around 100 - 150 students with special needs, benefiting from a psychologist teacher, a speech therapist teacher and a support teacher. Our school carries out activities related to the inclusive education of these students through the psycho-pedagogical assistance office, the speech therapy office and through the support teacher for the students from preparatory classes to the 8th grade. However, our school did not have, in a past, a solid European experience in terms of knowledge of other European education systems. There was a need for inserting new approaches to the class level, increasing the motivation of students for learning, reducing the degree of intolerance and violence between students, or parents - students, parents - parents. The teachers qualified in various subjects in the school did not have enough skills in carrying out the activities with the students with special needs and they were not familiar with the current techniques of inclusive education. The lack of a wider range of local and national courses on our topic of interest was another reason why apply for an Erasmus KA1 project.
