Objectives

The first objective of the project was O1: “Education through Information” – developing media literacy competencies for NEETs and youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds from multiple Romanian South-Eastern counties, emphasising the responsible use of traditional and modern media sources, in order to combat the spread of fake news, of discrimination and of hate speech. This objective aimed to help reach the 1st, 4th, 6th and 11th objectives from the EU’s Youth Strategy. This objective aimed for the personal development of the mentioned target group, in order to facilitate a better understanding of disinformation, while developing their critical thinking. The aims also included the prevention of hate speech and of discrimination based on social, racial and gender motives. The facilitation team, Mircea Cuciureanu, Dora Timar, Miruna Toma, Madalina Ardelean, Veronica Ene, Lucia Miron, have either relevant background in political sciences, journalism, international relations and/or hosting trainings. They are also involved in the PoliticALL project, whose identity revolves around “#EducationThroughInformation”. Thus, this objective stemming both from needs that have been identified by the team and the projects coordinator, Adrian Calugaru, through working and studying in media or adjacent domains in the last 10 – 15 years, as well as through passion for the topic and the Romanian Humanist Association’s identity, which revolves around the values mentioned in the Amsterdam Declaration on Modern Humanism. The objective was achieved through a series of non-formal activities related to discovering the history of journalism, predicting its future, creating physical and digital pieces of media, role playing as journalists, doing “on site” investigations in the towns of the mobilities, study visits for youth workers and conferences for youngsters with stakeholders from the civil society sector. The second objective of the project was O2: “Raising Awareness, Inclusion and Active Participation for the Environment” – raising awareness about environmental issues, while also understating impact at grass roots levels, as well as EU level, related to pollution and the degradation of the environment for NEETs and youngsters from multiple South-Eastern Romanian counties. This was done through combining art- and sporting-related activities with environmental focused activities – piquing the interest of youngsters that were cautious about getting involved in green activities. The objectives were drafted after consulting the target group through a series of questionnaires, thus the approach that was taken was meant to satisfy the highlighted needs – educational and social. These needs were related to learning how to recycle and upcycle, uninformed throwing of the trash (as well as littering) and disinterest in the preservation of green spaces in cities and towns – both at beneficiary and stakeholder/authority level. Thus, study visits, upcycling and recycling activities, plogging and environmental media literacy methods were adopted, in order to accomplish the objective and aid reach the EU’s Youth Strategy 3rd and 10th objectives. The objectives were achieved through 6 activities, 1 training course, 3 youth exchanges and 2 study visits. The study visits were implemented in Spain, Elche and Valencia, respectively, while the other activities took place in Romania, Busteni. Both objectives were achieved also trough the activity of the PoliticALL project, continuously creating pieces of informative media and preparing volunteers on digital and written media, as well as on combatting fake news, understating news cycles and biases. On top of PoliticALL, the partnership with the Norwegian Humanists, Human Etisk Forbund, was capitalised through the implementation of Bucharest-based events – Grab a Cup of Humanism. These events have represented an opportunity to bridge the gap between the target group and stakeholder/civil society actors (editions that stand out are: “Ce rost mai are: Activism pe intelesul tinerilor” – speaker Ana Mocanu, Funky Citizens; “AI 2030: Ce urmeaza”, speaker Valentin Lazureanu, visual identity and PR; “Substante psihoactive si lumea noastra” – speakers Vlad Zaha, Oxford Specialist on criminology, and Catalin Moise, video essayist and youtuber).
