Objectives

We are living in a Europe more and more Eurosceptic. Ultranational governments are ruling now over Poland and Hungary. In France, Marine Le Pen has lost the elections, but Giorgia Meloni has won in Italy-making it the furthest right Government since the end of the 2nd World War. What we see in Europe, can also be noticed in Romania. The laws proposed are more and more radical, and even if they have not passed yet, there is also the underlying ”when”. Also, the most affected people will be the ones with lesser opportunities. The ”lower class”. Paradoxically, they are the main force of them too. They are looking for a strong, charismatic leader that will ”save” them from the reality of the last 30 years . People involved in this project went on ”A remembrance journey to totalitarianism”. They got a better understanding on how it started, the causes, what were the signs for them, but also the consequences. We also wanted to visit some organisations and institutions that deal with how the totalitarian regimes are remembered in these countries. We wanted the participants to learn the signs of the past, so we could recognize them in the present, and prevent any catastrophic future. More specifically, the learning outcomes we aimed at were the following: LO1: Get a better understanding of the totalitarian regimes in Europe; LO2: Increase the critical thinking by questioning aspects related to the totalitarian regimes by visiting memorial places, museums and organisations active in the field; LO3: Increase the independent living skills by empowering them to manage their budget, time and to live independently; LO4: Increase the digital skills of the participants by onboarding them into sharing relevant social media content on topics related to their learning journey; Furthermore, this project is part of the remembrance pillar of the “Democracy and Human Rights” portfolio at GEYC where we are looking at ways to make young people aware of the past and understand important lessons towards democracy and human rights education.
