Objectives

By implementing the CTIS project, we aimed to achieve the following: • Promoting innovative teaching practices: The project sought to stimulate the use of flipped classroom methods in higher education to teach critical media literacy, addressing challenges in creating and using such materials. • Developing comprehensive educational resources: We intended to create open-source digital materials for an entire course in critical media literacy, including videos, pre- and post-tests, and classroom activities, available in seven European languages. • Enhancing transversal skills: The project aimed to jointly develop critical thinking and media literacy skills, which are essential for navigating the information society. • Supporti digital transformation: By creating digital educational materials and fostering their use, the project aligned with EU priorities like the Digital Education Action Plan. • Increasi accessibility and collaboration: The multilingual nature of the resources ensured broader accessibility, while collaboration among institutions addressed the resource-intensive nature of flipped classroom design. • Raisi awareness and adoption: We aimed to increase awareness among educators about the availability of these resources.

Background

The CTIS project was initiated to address gaps in implementing flipped classroom methods for teaching critical media literacy. While research supports these methods, practical challenges like the time-intensive creation of materials hinder adoption. The project aimed to overcome this by collaboratively developing ready-to-use, open-source digital resources covering an entire course in higher education, reducing the burden on individual academics. It addressed several needs: bridging the gap between theory and practice, providing multilingual resources (in seven European languages), and creating practical approaches to jointly develop critical thinking and media literacy skills. The project also supported digital transformation in higher education, aligning with EU policies like the Digital Education Action Plan. By pooling resources across institutions, CTIS tackled the demand for accessible, high-quality educational materials that link critical thinking and media literacy while promoting innovation in teaching through digital tools.
