Through this project, we successfully equipped VET learners and educators with essential skills to drive sustainability and digital transformation in the fashion sector. We developed and implemented a comprehensive online platform that integrates AI tools, including an educational chatbot, to support eco-conscious design learning. The project delivered a Compendium of best practices, interactive learning modules, and training content focused on circular design, sustainable materials, and digital innovation. Learners gained practical knowledge in areas such as zero-waste patterns, AI-supported forecasting, and design for longevity. Educators now have access to innovative teaching materials aligned with current industry needs and EU sustainability goals. The project fostered a stronger awareness of fashion’s environmental footprint and provided actionable solutions for reducing it from the design stage. As a result, we built the capacity of VET systems to prepare future professionals who are digitally skilled, sustainability-minded, and better positioned for a changing labor market.
We applied this project to address the urgent need for change in the fashion industry, which is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions, 20% of wastewater, and the release of microplastics into the oceans. The rise of fast fashion has led to massive overproduction and waste, while 87% of clothing ends up in landfills. Our goal was to tackle these challenges through education—starting with the design phase, which determines over 80% of a product’s environmental impact. The project empowers VET learners and trainers with digital tools and AI applications to promote sustainability, reduce waste, and rethink fashion practices. It equips future professionals with the skills to design smarter, work more efficiently, and create value in a more circular and responsible fashion system. AI can support decision-making, reduce unsold stock, and improve forecasting—key for a sustainable transition. This initiative responds to the growing need for greener business models, offering a strategic path to upskilling the workforce while reducing fashion’s environmental and social footprint.
