Understanding the global trend and the potential that rural tourism holds, it became evident that the Republic of Serbia, with its abundant natural and anthropogenic resources, could tap into this opportunity for economic development. With 85% of its territory consisting of rural areas, diverse geographical landscapes, pristine nature, a multiethnic population, and a wealth of cultural and historical monuments, Serbia possessed a significant but untapped potential for rural tourism. Similar situation is all around the Europe. This is why this project had an idea to gather youth workers from different European countries and all together to work on the common goals. It was also essential to acknowledge the environmental impact that tourism, particularly in its current consumerist form, had on the environment. Tourism, as traditionally practiced, generates vast amounts of waste and consumes resources without proper consideration for sustainability. To address this challenge and align with the goals of the Strategic Plan for more sustainable tourism, the project aimed to introduce the concept of the circular economy—a regenerative economic system that aims to retain the value of products, parts, and materials. The main idea of this project was to train youth workers with a framework where they can learn how to manage touristic activities in terms of sustainability, especially focusing and applying circular economy. During this training course we gathered 24 youth workers from Slovenia, Spain, The Netherlands, Portugal, Turkey and Serbia and they learnt different ways about how to put in value and promote circular economy applied on rural tourism and how to use them as touristic and cultural economic opportunities for professionals and entrepreneurs from their territories. The particular objectives of this project were to face the challenges which have arisen from touristic activities and adapt them for a more sustainable system focusing on the circular economy system. Some of these objectives were: -Promote rural tourism and rural heritage -Promote entrepreneurship in rural areas -Reduction of overcrowding of some popular destinations. -Reduction of waste and improve its management. -Promotion of eco-friendly products in rural tourism. -Apply a circular economy for the good use of resources. -Take care of the environment. Thanks to this project, youth workers in the area of tourism are now able to address these problems and apply new methodologies that will help to improve rural tourism in different parts of Europe. During the training course the youth workers shared different points of view based on their experiences and multiculturality, which was an important concept within this project. The vision was to empower youth workers in the tourism industry to tackle these challenges and implement innovative methodologies that would enhance rural tourism across Europe. The project sought to facilitate knowledge exchange, collaboration, and cultural diversity among participants from different European territories. Through training courses and shared experiences, the project aimed to inspire participants to think creatively and critically about how to leverage circular economy principles in the context of rural tourism.
