The aim of AGFORWEB project was to improve education in the field of agroforestry which is recognized as sustainable land use solution with potential to combat climate change, enhance biodiversity, and improve local people well-being. Curricula improvement of seven agroforestry or related modules at partner universities included the implementation of digital tools in planning and design of agroforestry practices, and creation of new learning materials such as a textbook - Agroforestry Practices in Southeast Europe and a manual for digital databases - GIS Application in Agroforestry. The joint digital database, enabled raising of digital literacy of students and their learning on real-world data but also it is resource for research. To ensure that knowledge in agroforestry is inclusive and accessible to farmers and policymakers, guides - Agroforestry in Practice were prepared in local languages, and workshops were conducted for them. Finally, sharing best practices among partner countries through study visits and guest lectures has fostered exchange and internationalization. That also strengthen cooperation among partner institutions and enabled networking both teaching stuff and students.
The need to implement innovative approaches in fight against climate change is urgent. It is necessary to identify all the resources and potentials of measures in different sectors that can contribute to this aim. Agroforestry practices stemming from traditional methods, revisited and adapted to local environmental and socioeconomic conditions, could serve as mighty tool for mitigating climate change. Students of agriculture and forestry, should be able to apply such innovative approaches through learning the concepts, design and implementation of agroforestry. To foster the adoption of agroforestry practices within local communities, it is essential to inform, educate, and train farmers and local governments on transitioning from conventional methods to agroforestry practices to help them diversify their production, increase profitability, and ensure long-term resource sustainability. The education of professionals in this field a lack of modern literature has been noted, as well as the lack in digital skills’ training in current curricula. This project specifically targets solving these shortcomings through the introduction of new literature, spatial databases in a GIS environment that will serve to educate new professionals.
