Objectives

We want to offer relevant and modern vocational training. By offering the opportunity to do APL in another European country, we wanted to broaden the students' general and job-specific knowledge and thereby make them more employable on the labor market both inside and outside Sweden's borders. Through the internationalization project, the students create contacts for life. Close contacts with tutors and host families strengthen both students' CVs and social contact networks. We also wanted to work according to the compensatory mandate of the School Act, so that it should be equally obvious for all students who want to participate in the project to actually do so, regardless of financial, cognitive or social conditions. An important component of this project has been to offer all students participation on the same terms. Strengthening the intercultural competence of our students has been another goal we wanted to achieve through the project. The school has an overarching mission to convey knowledge about basic democratic values such as the equal value of all people, equality and solidarity between people. By letting the students work in another country, we wanted to strengthen these skills.

Background

Midsommarkransen's high school has had a long experience of international exchanges and projects within the framework of our vocational programs. The aim is to give students international perspectives and experiences of their future professions. Furthermore, we want to strengthen the students' language skills, raise their self-confidence and give the students opportunities to become more employable. We want to give the students new valuable knowledge for their ongoing education, both professionally, and a strengthened intercultural understanding By offering students APL abroad, we wanted to offer a relevant and reality-based education that prepares them for a future professional life that is based on both governing documents and the EU's general key competences. Furthermore, the compensatory assignment has been an important factor in starting this project. Many of our vocational students come from families of lower socio-economic status. Through this project, we wanted to reach students who would otherwise not have the financial conditions, or the self-confidence to acquire an international experience.
