Objectives

The main objective of the project was to develop and implement a standardized, practical employment model for individuals with intellectual disabilities across Europe. We aimed to increase the professional competencies of adults working in the employment and education of people with intellectual disabilities—such as job counselors, special education teachers, NGO staff, and cooperative members—by providing them with a comprehensive guidebook and structured training. Through this model, we sought to improve access to employment, support inclusive job placement practices, and ensure sustainable social inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Additionally, we aimed to foster transnational cooperation by sharing best practices, aligning approaches, and creating a replicable tool that could be adapted in different countries. A key goal was also to raise awareness and shift societal attitudes, demonstrating that people with intellectual disabilities can meaningfully contribute to the labor market when supported with appropriate tools and inclusive environments.

Background

We applied for this project to address the widespread lack of structured support for the employment of individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). Despite inclusion efforts, their employment rates remain critically low across Europe. There was a clear need for a standardized, practical guidebook and training model to support professionals such as job counselors, teachers, and NGO staff in guiding individuals with ID into the workforce. We also identified a gap in cooperation between institutions and inconsistent employment practices across countries. By creating a common EU-based employment model, we aimed to provide a scalable, inclusive solution. The project also sought to raise awareness about the capabilities of people with ID and to support professionals in offering more effective, individualized employment guidance. Overall, the project responded directly to the EU’s priorities on social inclusion, adult education, and sustainable employment.
