Objectives

We aim to improve the knowledge of parents, carers, educators and school administrators about teenage mental health, including common challenges, early warning signs and the impact of mental wellbeing on academic and social development. To encourage open discussions about mental health, helping adults and teenagers feel more comfortable seeking and providing support without fear of judgement or misunderstanding. To encourage schools and families to adopt long-term practices that prioritise mental health, such as regular workshops, peer support groups and collaboration with mental health professionals. Ultimately, the goal was to contribute to healthier communities by ensuring that teenagers receive the emotional support they need for academic, social and personal success.

Background

We applied for this project because we strongly believe that addressing mental health challenges among teenagers is important, particularly by equipping key adults in their lives – parents, caregivers, educators and school administrators – with the knowledge and tools to support them. Adolescence is a critical developmental stage marked by significant emotional, social and academic pressures. Many teenagers experience mental health problems, but the stigma surrounding these problems and the lack of adequate resources often prevent timely intervention. The needs we aimed to address with this project are two. First, there is a general lack of awareness among adults about the signs and symptoms of mental health problems in teenagers. Second, there is often a gap in the skills and confidence needed to provide appropriate support. By providing targeted education and outreach activities, I sought to empower these key stakeholders to recognize and respond to mental health challenges and promote a healthier and more supportive environment for young people. Ultimately, this project reflects our commitment to creating a positive impact in community by promoting mental health awareness and removing barriers to open supportive communication.
