We wrote and planned the project during the Covid-19 epidemic, when young people were confined to their homes and schooling was distance learning. At the same time, we were not allowed to socialize with our peers and family to the extent we were used to. All activities, including social contacts, have moved online to an even greater extent than before. As the epidemic continued over several years, the number of people, especially young people, who became lonely and insecure increased, social contact decreased, and feelings of social isolation and alienation increased. Online and social tools did not allow us to have as satisfying social contacts as we would have liked. As a consequence, our mental health also deteriorated. With the Youth Exchange, we wanted to encourage young people and offer them other ways to stay socially connected, interact with each other and learn more about themselves. By exposing young people to new ways of communicating and also to new cultures, we have given them a greater sense of connectedness, but also of the tolerance and cooperation that they bring as a result. This has improved individual self-esteem, increased interconnectedness and strengthened international cooperation. We have improved our mental health. Through online media, we keep in touch at a distance (including internationally), while empowering ourselves and becoming better members of the European community. Our goals were for young people to get to know themselves and others, to find interconnectedness and cooperation, i.e. to learn the competences to improve their mental health, all of which we managed to do in the course of our project. Young people have become empowered and are not afraid to express their opinions in order to become more active in their community. They are passing on their knowledge and ideas, both at home, at local level, as well as at national and inter-national level. With this project we continued our story, which in the previous project focused on physical health. With the same partners, we have expanded our knowledge and competences and built stronger links between partners, which also allows us to better further international cooperation.
