Objectives

The project started in the context of youth from 10 organizations, 9 of which were from the EU, whose members had met in 2019 at various conferences all over Europe, such as ̋Coordination of Youth Workers for Tomorrow ̋, ̋Empowering You(th) ̋, ̋Youth for Human Rights & Dignity ̋, ̋Improve and prevent ̋ and ̋Raising awareness among the European Youth on social inequalities: the current refugee situation ̋. At all these activities, the youth had discussed that, since most of them were newly established organizations, they wanted to gain new skills in the field of communication with the relevant Decision Makers, to enable them to take part in the EU Youth Dialogue processes and provide proposals of Youth policies at EU & National level. They wished to gain these skills to see how educational policies that are being created at the EU level could improve and empower youth and strengthen their mental health. Since one of our partners, WYA Europe, had been working actively with the Decision Makers in the EP for 21 years at this point, combined with the fact that WYA Europe would face staff transitions in 2022, we agreed that we could help in the logistical preparations and implementation if they could help us and other partners in meeting the MEPs better. After the COVID pandemic surprised us all, we started to have monthly meetings on Zoom, where the plan for this project crystallised as an idea. Due to the circumstances, we also questioned how we could maintain contact with Decision makers in times of crisis, and therefore we prepared this project idea. We wished to strengthen youth mental health and resilience in stressful times like these. The objectives of the project were: To enable young people to participate in the EU discussion with MEPs on youth mental health in the context of prevention and education. To create a strategic plan for mental health prevention through education during the international youth meeting in Brussels and present MEPs with youth recommendations. This interaction of young people with MEPs resulted in new ideas, creative solutions and recommendations that could be applied both at the EU and national levels. To enable young people to participate in such thematic actions at a local level. The aim was to achieve a long-term outcome. Young People (YP) equipped with the skills, tools, and knowledge gained during this project could initiate and coordinate preventive educational activities in their countries in the area of youth mental health and well-being. Furthermore, MEPs were encouraged to support such actions in their countries, which would increase the credibility of such youth activities. Enabled the 10 organizations to stay in touch with each other as well as with MEPs through their assistants, before, during and after the project, which resulted in the creation of a synergistic network. This cooperation during and after the project positively influenced the level of discussion in the mentioned area, since young people have a deeper perspective on contemporary mental health issues. MEPs benefited from receiving recommendations from YP, and YP benefited from gaining experience in participating in public debate. Additionally, they got a chance to express their view on topics concerning their peers. The main activity gathered 40 participants from Germany, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Croatia, Austria, Romania, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Poland.
