Through the project, we planned to implement robotics in the curriculum of the subject Information technologies with an emphasis on the STEM concept and the development of exploratory skills. The aim was to professionally equip Information technology teachers with new methodologies and knowledge in the field of robotics, to provide professional didactic preparation for extracurricular club activities called Lego Robot Programming. Another aim was to modernize the teaching process through innovative methods in the bilingually-taught subjects, to select and create appropriate innovative teaching materials with a focus on active learning of students. The intention was to establish further cooperation with Erasmus+ teachers and with schools where they teach.
Gymnázium Andreja Kmeťa in Banská Štiavnica is a general and a bilingual school. The current number of students is 435. The school offers three forms of study – a four-year Slovak section, a five-year bilingual Slovak-English and a bilingual Slovak-Russian section. The main goal of the school is to provide students with the most flexible competences and skills so that they do not limit their choice of further university studies. The need of the school is a constant qualification and proficiency improvement on the side of teachers as well as strengthening their flexibility and expertise. Further goals are modernising the teaching process based on the needs of the 21st century as well fostering the language knowledge of educators. What is needed is to professionally equip teachers with Information Technology and subjects taught bilingually with methodologies and new knowledge also from international sources. We also need to effectively approach the teaching of robotics and scientific subjects in English and we should enable students to learn using modern educational methods and school supplies. The aim is also to give them tasks with a creative approach to problem solving and teamwork required.
