Objectives

The main objective of the DiscoverEU “Young Travelers” project was to contribute to the individual and social development of young people through intercultural experiences. The project aimed to concretely promote concepts such as equal opportunities, social inclusion and active citizenship among young people and to help participants develop a more informed, inclusive and empathetic view of European societies. Accordingly, we aimed to enable young people to discover Europe's cultural heritage, history and diversity on the ground, while at the same time strengthening their sense of belonging to the European Union. We aimed to provide a multidimensional learning experience by enabling the participants not only to see different cities, but also to have direct contact with the social structures, cultural practices and everyday lifestyles in these regions. An important aspect of the project is the aim of carrying the academic and cultural studies carried out within the Divan Association Balkans Monitoring Center to the field. This field-based mobility with 18-year-old young people who wanted to get to know the historical, ideological, political and sociological structure of the Balkans more closely enabled the participants to combine their knowledge with practical observation. Thus, the participants fed their academic interest in the Balkans with observation and interaction in the field, and realized a deeper and more permanent learning by communicating directly with the people of the region. The initial goal of reaching 4 Balkan countries had to be revised due to the difficulties in visa processes; however, the mobilizations took place in Germany, Austria and Belgium, and care was taken to maintain the Balkan theme, taking into account the strong ties of these countries with Balkan migrant communities. In addition, the digital media skills of the project participants improved significantly during this process. The participants shared their impressions, cultural observations and social analysis during their travels on Balkan Bulletin social media accounts with both written and visual content. In this way, learning processes were made visible to the public in an interactive way, both supporting individual learning and raising awareness of the Erasmus+ program.
