Objectives

The overarching objective of ETHICS4CHALLENGES was to equip actors from the academic and non-academic sectors with ethical awareness and critical thinking skills related to contemporary scientific and technological challenges and to support the proliferation of ethics education that addresses these challenges. The project aimed to assist individuals and institutions in developing flexible ethics education pathways adapted to different target groups, disciplines, learning formats and professional contexts. Based on a concrete needs analysis, it sought to provide relevant, state-of-the-art, easily accessible, and customizable educational materials and methodological guidance to support the integration of ethics education into higher education curricula and professional ethics training in the non-academic sector, including public bodies, businesses, research organizations, and NGOs. The ETHICS4CALLENGES online educational platform also aimed to bridge the gap between abstract ethics education and applied perspectives and to move beyond conventional pedagogical models through practice-oriented methodological guidance for flexible course design and a tailored handbook of resources and case studies.

Background

ETHICS4CHALLENGES was developed in response to the increasing ethical challenges posed by rampant digitalization, biomedicalization and environmental degradation, which affect every aspect of social life. These challenges evolve faster than existing legal, institutional and educational frameworks, creating a gap between technological developments and the capacity of individuals and organizations to address them. In higher education, instruction in the ethics of science and technology is often absent, or, when present, treated in an abstract or inflexible manner, or restricted to professional ethics. It frequently lacks content tailored to specific disciplines and has a limited connection to concrete real-world cases. Similar needs characterize the public and private sectors, where institutions face concrete ethical dilemmas without sufficient training or pratice-oriented resources. ETHICS4CHALLENGES was conceived to address these shared needs through a digital platform comprising multidisciplinary, up-to-date, real-world and practice-oriented resources and methodological guidance to support the development of flexible ethics education pathways for diverse target groups, thereby fostering ethical awareness and critical thinking.
