With the World Poetry Slam Championship we empowered young people and gave them the change to develop their talents. 40 young artists from different countries and all sorts of social backgrounds we offered a worldwide platform where they enhanced their creativity & network. But also by employing a young and enthusiastic team of project managers, creatives and volunteers. They got the chance to build their network, develop their skills and make this project their own, thus ensuring the future of international poetry slam contests and all activities around it. Via an extensive supporting programme, we connected them with the Brussels youth of underprivileged backgrounds, to have them participating in different activities, to learn them about poetry slam and the values and principles it is based upon. Secondly, inclusivity and equality were at the core of the project. We builded an inclusive network where everyone felt welcome and accepted, thus creating a safe space where topics such as decolonization, repression of minorities, freedom of expression, LGBTQI+ and other European values were high on the agenda. By facilitating a dialogue about certain difficult topics we strived to put Brussels, Belgium and by extent also Europe in the spotlight as a multilingual and tolerant region, where freedom of speech and respect for everyone regardless of skin color, language origin, religion, gender etc is the standard. This was reflected in both the diversity of the artists & team involved (providing in the needs of everyone), as well as in the activities, where we for instance collaborated with organizations working on LGTBQ+ rights, social mobility by education and so much more. Furthermore, we strived for the international recognition of slam poetry as an art form and the poetry slam contest format as an exchange of linguistic artistic expressions. Our international network of slam poets and organizers of poetry slam contest runs all over the world, and our dialogue and decision making proces was based on democratic values and horizontal policy making. We wanted to achieve an inclusive collaboration across borders, weaving networks that last longer than one event. It may not come as a surprise that as such, multilingualism is an essential aspect of slam poetry and was very important in our project. We aimed at promoting this multilingualism in all our activities and in all levels of our organization. As such, for instance, the poems that were performed, were translated & screened in 4 different languages. After the project we still believe the future looks bright for slam poetry and international poetry slam contests. The World Championship proved that as an art form it appeals to a very young, diverse and international audience, which creates bonds between people from all kind of different backgrounds, ages, cultures, etc. With our project - organizing a distinct inclusive world championship of poetry slam and an extensive supporting program - we provided a fertile breeding ground for young talent who supports the European values and becomes a fierce advocate of them.
