The primary objective of our project was to establish a small transnational cooperation partnership aimed at addressing common needs and priorities in school education, specifically focusing on improving children's well-being and mental health. This was accomplished by providing teachers and parents with the necessary tools and techniques to better support children in their transition from school to adulthood. Additionally, the project emphasized social inclusion by targeting individuals living in rural and remote areas with fewer opportunities. We aimed at: 1. Strengthening the capacity of the 3 partners to work transnationally and across sectors by developing a comprehensive toolbox of mindfulness guided meditations, games, instructions, and manuals, and making these resources available through a web platform. 2. Enhancing the inclusion of underserved target groups by involving them in testing the Mindfulness and Meditation Toolbox (MMT) and participating in project activities such as summer camp, thus providing them access to the Program. 3. Encouraging collaboration between teachers and families by involving them in the co-creation process, MMT testing, and summer camp.
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated growing concerns among parents, teachers, and professionals about children's mental health. According to UNICEF's "State of the World's Children 2021" Report, the mental health situation for children in Europe is alarming, with 9 million adolescents aged 10 to 19 suffering from mental disorders. In specific countries, the prevalence is particularly high: Bulgaria at 11.2%, Portugal at 19.8%, and Spain at 20.8%. Anxiety and depression alone accounted for 55% of these mental disorders in 2019. Mindfulness and meditation, which has gained significant academic and clinical attention since its introduction to Western medicine in the late 1970s, has been validated by numerous studies for its positive impact on mental health. Specifically, mindfulness programs in schools have shown promising results, including improved self-regulation, impulse control, memory, attention, concentration, compassion, and empathy. These programs are also associated with reduced stress, anxiety, and depression, and increased self-esteem, vitality, and authenticity. Our project aimed to leverage these proven benefits to address the mental health challenges faced by children.
