Objectives

Employees are more aware of cultural differences. They know how to create a safe, inclusive and all-round development supporting environment for a child from a different culture background. Teachers help the child to adapt to a new culture and be in an unfamiliar environment by adapting the learning environment and methods, and by including the child in all activities carried out in the group. When planning and carrying out learning activities, teachers take into account the Estonian language level of all children and, if necessary, use second language teaching methodologies, when conducting group activities. In the kindergarten, Estonian language classes are held once a week for children who speak it as a second language. The employees of the kindergarten are more balanced and cope better in stressful situations. Employees know what components our general well-being consists of and what to pay attention to in stressful situations. Teachers' toolbox is expanding with different techniques to use in everyday life or crisis situations. They know what helps maintiaining better resilience and well-being.

Background

Tartu Lasteaed Krõll is a preschool institution whose activities are based on the National Curriculum. Our kindergarten has a total of 12 groups for children aged 2-7. We also have groups for special needs. Recently, Krõll has become more and more culturally diverse. Teachers whose group includes a child from a different cultural and language background, must be able to create a safe, inclusive and supportive environment and deal with obstacles that may arise. Thus, as part of this project, our employees participated in cultural diversity training in Tenerife. In addition, children's Estonian language level must be taken into account when carrying out learning activities, and children with diferent mother tongue may need additional support in learning Estonian. To develop practical skills in this field, the teachers participated in a language training course in Italy. In order for the staff to be able to ensure the best learning environment for the children, they must also take care of their own health and well-being. We want employees to be aware of the symptoms of stress and burnout and know different ways to deal with them. So the project´s third course in Ireland was to support employees' mental resiliance.
