Objectives

By implementing this project, we wanted to raise awareness and create open discussions to help ensure that young people are able to make informed and responsible decisions regarding addictive substances and addictions. Since the overall substance consumption among young people is increasing, illicit substances are becoming more easily accessible and international policies concerning drug use are becoming more relaxed, we wanted to create an environment where young people could converse and educate each other via peer-to-peer learning, as they are more likely to meaningfully engage with someone close to their age, rather than listen to lectures. The main objectives of the youth exchange were to • discuss what is substance dependence, and what substances can cause dependence. • research the historical roots of substance use and explain why certain substances are classified as illicit (eg. cannabis), and certain substances are widely used in society (eg. tobacco), and why both can be addictive and dangerous. • share and discuss the role and policies on substance use in partner countries. • grasp the scope of the issues that stem from substance dependence, and that it affects not only the individual but society on a larger scale. • realise how to deal with peer pressure and make conscious decisions. • discuss how to recognise the signs and support someone who struggles with substance use. • have an overview of the support available for individuals who are suffering from dependence.
