Objectives

The project aimed to help Ukrainians integrate into the community by creating high-quality learning opportunities for them in the library. To this end, the competence of library staff was increased and they were taught how to overcome the cultural and social gap; how a good cooperation between libraries and business could work and what new courses could be offered to Ukrainians in libraries.

Background

The project partners were three libraries from Estonia, Latvia and Denmark and the Turku Women's Centre from Finland. Libraries have several good qualities for implementing such a project: 1. TASKS OF LIBRARIES - INFORMATION GIVING, SPACE FOR ACTIVITIES, unites different actors with a common goal 2. SOCIAL MISSION, to maintain cohesion in society, equality perspective (including immigrants), give and create possibilities for good and sustainable life 3. EARLIER SUCCESSFUL COOPERATION - Common projects since 2014 (Nordplus Adult) Europe is changing at a rapid pace. Communities are becoming increasingly heterogeneous (language, ethnic background and culture). In the near future, skills supporting the integration of immigrants will be an important part of the necessary competencies for library staff. Due to the war in Ukraine, millions of Ukrainians have had to leave their homes and find refuge elsewhere. Libraries must take into account the challenges of a changing world in their visions for the future. A library is a community center where different people from different nationalities and cultures meet. New times place new demands on library staff.
