Objectives

There were two main aims 1. Ecological interventions in the school, which are simple, easy and economical. We wanted to support recycling and circular economy activities, with little financial cost and with improvisation of students and teachers. The aim was to show that when there is will, when there is cooperation in the school community and when there is planning by the students themselves, the ecological approach is successful. 2. Educational ideas for all school subjects and interdisciplinary subjects that cultivate ecological awareness. Many teachers, regardless of their participation in the project, designed lessons that initiate action and motivate students. Specific objectives were: 1. Continuous training of teachers and students 2. To make the school environmentally friendly and to spread its protection of environment 3. To have action groups in each school 4. To take into consideration and implement primarily the ideas of the students so that they love the interventions. 5. The opening of the school to society with actions related to respect for the environment.

Background

The proposal was about the approach of an eco-school. It was noticed that schools, either because of ignorance or lack of financial resources, did not offer recycling facilities and in general did not reinforce ecological awareness. We focused on environmental interventions that are easily applicable in public schools without many resources. At the same time we focused on engaging students by implementing the ideas they suggested so that the eco-school could be adopted by the students themselves. The Directorate of Secondary Education in the Dodecanese collaborated with two Greek schools, in different urban areas and with completely different student populations, the Gymnasio Gennadiou Rodos and the 1st Lyceum Papagos in Athens. We also collaborated with two Spanish public schools, from different economic, geographical and social regions and with different student characteristics, the IES El Sobradillo and the IES Guimar on the island of Tenerife in Spain.
