The main objective of the TREASURE project was to help young people become more confident and active in society by giving them the knowledge, skills, and digital tools they need to take part in democratic life, especially around topics like the environment and social inclusion. We wanted to support a new generation of young digital citizens across Europe, who feel ready to speak up and take action for their communities. With the project, we created useful and easy-to-access learning materials and an online platform to support self-learning and civic participation. One of our key goals was to improve digital skills in five areas: understanding data, communicating and working with others, creating digital content, staying safe online, and solving problems. We also wanted to show young people how to use tools like the European Citizens’ Initiative to take part in EU decision-making from the ground up. By promoting the use of e-activism and digital media, we hoped to inspire young people to get involved and help build a more inclusive and sustainable future.
We applied for the TREASURE project because we recognised a growing need for digital empowerment among young people, particularly following the COVID-19 crisis. The pandemic highlighted existing inequalities in access to digital tools and quality learning environments, especially for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many young people lacked the confidence, knowledge, and skills to engage in civic life through digital means, and were unfamiliar with concepts such as e-activism or online advocacy for social and environmental causes. At the same time, youth workers and educators often did not have sufficient resources or training to support them effectively. Through TREASURE, we aimed to address these challenges by developing accessible digital tools, interactive training, and a user-friendly e-learning platform. The project focused on building competences in digital inclusion, community media, and civic participation, helping young people and youth professionals alike to gain practical skills and confidence. Our ambition was to support young people in becoming more active, informed, and engaged citizens—able to use digital technologies to promote positive change and contribute to a fairer and more inclusive society.
