Objectives

The project had three objectives: 1) to increase Roma youth’s knowledge of their own culture 2) to reflect the Roma heritage through the present youth culture 3) to update some of the clichés associated with the Roma culture through artistic means The project was implemented in transnational collaboration by small and fragile Roma civil society organisations from Finland, Estonia and Lithuania, where the Roma population is small, meaning there is much in common and thus much to be shared. In this project, the Baltic Roma were, for the first time, taken to be part of the European co-operation.

Background

Throughout centuries the survival of the Roma culture in Europe was conveyed via artistic means that became the core elements of Roma identities and narratives for both the community itself as well as to the non-Roma perception. Today however many youths choose to stay silent about their Roma heritage due to discrimination. The project promotes the active citizenship of the Roma youth, who as a group, are young people with fewer opportunities. They have not participated in any civic activities, which means that they have not got involved in the life of their community nor the society. Roma youth are at the bottom of the hierarchy in the Roma communities where higher age equals knowledge and wisdom. Many aspects of the Roma culture are based on respecting the elderly, and most of the customs and rules are somehow connected to this. Therefore, it is the elderly people who represent the whole community. In this project, Roma youth are given the change to articulate their own vision on Roma culture and heritage as well as what is means to be a Roma youth in this day and age.
