Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)Overcoming skills mismatch and addressing the needs of the labour market

Objectives

How It Works In life Itself! has been designed to develop innovative teaching-learning modules and guidelines for supporting secondary school students’ aspiration and imagination towards the future. Our inclusive, future-oriented approach addressed the acute problems of European societies related to science education: the decrease in student interest in pursuing STEM (ScienceTechnology-Engineering-Mathematics) careers and the “skill-gap” between school learning and labour market needs. It has been designed to work on one of the eight key competences for lifelong learning, that is "Mathematical competence and competence in science, technology, and engineering".

Background

We wanted to promote interest and excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and the STEM approach. We also wanted to promote a comprehensive approach to language teaching and learning and inclusion and diversity in all fields of education, training, youth and sport.
