Our central objective was inclusion in the education and training of young people and young adults. Our ambition was to support teachers in adopting innovative teaching methods by providing them with simplified and visual training tools. The aim of this project was to respond to an issue identified by FE through a survey of its stakeholders, revealing that accommodating disability in training is a major challenge for the teachers and trainers in our network. FE had initially responded to this need with specific training courses, but we wanted to go further. Current legislation requires schools to cater for people with reading and comprehension difficulties, including the compulsory presence of a disability adviser. The project aimed to meet this requirement by providing tools for both teachers and learners. The needs study confirmed the interest and expectations for these tools. Our project aimed to capitalise on this enthusiasm for educational innovation and meet the expectations of professionals and learners, by proving that these changes are not only necessary but also feasible.
We applied for this project to enable learners with reading or comprehension difficulties to continue their learning in conditions similar to those of others. Our aim is to develop alternative languages to facilitate their learning, in particular by testing and developing two tools: simplified or easy-to-read and understand language and graphic facilitation. Many learners with reading or comprehension difficulties abandon their studies because of the complexity of texts, information overload, boredom, the speed of courses and the difficulty of expressing their knowledge in writing. These obstacles generate a high cognitive load, with problems of concentration, comprehension and memorisation, leading a third of learners to become discouraged. We also gathered the views of teachers and trainers, many of whom would like to make their information more accessible. In response to these challenges, we have created tools to : Provide teachers with tools to improve their practices in lesson preparation, facilitation and assessment. Increase the number of simplified and visual aids in training centres. Reduce the number of drop-outs due to reading or comprehension difficulties.
