Physical and mental health, well-being

Objectives

The school wanted to ensure a pleasant school environment and stimulate positive emotions in students and teachers; participants in the teaching process must know how to deal with emotional difficulties. The project should have introduced and improved knowledge and skills of teachers about mindfulness techniques used in the classroom (and at home) in order to recognize emotions, regulate them and become aware of stress triggers, and then teach the same techniques to students through teaching activities. Effective communication techniques could be applied to communication with parents, which is becoming demanding. Mental health is closely related to physical activity. The space of the school and the schoolyard could be used as a place for the classroom and for a pleasant stay at school; it included sports, exercise and outdoor time in more teaching activities. Through experiential learning, teachers combined curriculum teaching outcomes and outdoor time. Students could become more aware of the importance of movement and sports. The project activities involved them in physical activity and also made them think and talk about their feelings and healthy habits (food and calories).

Background

The project was applied in order to work on the mental and physical health of the students and teachers through planning some physical activities with the students in the form of outdoor classroom activities and experiential learning and to learn more about the mental health, especially mindfulness. After covid epidemics the need to socialize and understand one's mental state was stated by the parents and by the teachers. Also, the use of mobile phones in the everyday life proved to be time-consuming on the expence of physical mobility and negative emotions. Less students are getting involved in extracurricular activities. Also, the teachers can notice a low level of fitness of students - those who are not members of the sports clubs. After the isolation period the schools need to be spaces that the students and teachers will feel comfortable in; this is why it is advisable to make the hall and the classroom not only physically comfortable but also a safe space where the everybody can feel better and express their feelings in a proper way. Taking students outside the classroom walls can help with that. Moreover, having the possibility to meet peers from other EU countries is a reference point and a chance to socialize.
