Objectives

The two schools both wanted to expand their international networks, find partner schools in forestry VET, which is a very small part of VET, so internationalisation was important. To learn about different teaching and learning methods and to experience different classroom teaching styles were also important. We also wanted to expand and refine the students' perspectives on another country, culture, people, food, language, urge them to speak English as much as possible and be more open to others and expand their social network internationally. We also wanted to give the chance to students to have more field practice on forestry machines in Finland, which is a lack in Hungary, while the Finnish students and teachers were introduced to different forest types in Hungary and their problems concerning climate change. Work based learning and learning by doing is a strong pillar of the Finnish education that can be a good example of students participating in the project and the intensive exposure to different forest types in Hungary can give knowledge advantage to Finnish students of the project.

Background

The project addressed different needs. The Hungarian school has not done any international projects so far and this was a great opportunity to get back on the international VET map with cooperation of the Finnish WinNova. The Finnish school's Forestry Department also targeted this need and the cooperation proved to be successful in terms of internationalisation. Another need was to expand students and teachers' knowledge in their vocation, experience different cultures and be more open and inclusive and use English. Field practice on forestry machines is a lack in Hungarian VET and this gap was aimed to be filled with cooperating with WinNova. In forestry VET, there are different kinds of learning and teaching methods in the two countries, which we found useful to share with each other, so knowledge sharing was also one of the needs of this project. The very strong work based learning and learning by doing in Finland gave the opportunity to Hungarian teaching staff to improve and refresh teaching methods and skills while theoretical education forms were introduced to Finnish teachers. Sharing teaching ideas among teachers and among students was a key element we wanted to achieve with this project.
