Objectives

Amalgama was created to respond to the needs of the partners to explore how drama methodologies can impact youth work in general, and in particular, cultural youth work. The project is a result of an Erasmus+ Partnership Building Activity (PBA) that Crooked House took part in in 2022. Its intention was to foster the exchange of good practices between partners and to expand the network of the beneficiary. The project featured mainly new partner organisations, who had expressed the need for providing knowledge, skills and experience to the youth workers they work with. The main objective of the project was to equip less experienced cultural youth workers with tools to help develop and support their practice using drama as the main methodology. The project aimed to cover this need not only through the work and learning that would be achieved during its main activity but also through providing the participants with an extensive network of contacts of both fellow youth workers and also creative practitioners from other European countries. Since formal education avenues in youth work often take the shape of expensive third-level university courses, and non-formal spaces are far and few between, the barrier to entry is either unattainably expensive, or non-existent - the latter being the case for some of the partner organisations who target geographically disadvantaged youth (such as Europe4Youth and Impluvium Teatro). Therefore, the beneficiary set out to open an entry point for European youth to begin their pursuit of cultural youth work. Amalgama aimed to respond to the need for a communal and collaborative network of like-minded individuals that can support and inspire each other during the process of exploring youth work as a sustainable practice. Amalgama set to promote the development of skills in new youth workers from all over Europe -as a project that promotes a culture of idea and experience sharing, Amalgama intended to be a springboard for future partnerships and projects, and to foster a community of new and eager youth workers.
