Objectives

Intercepting training gaps in both health and legal education on LGBTQ+ issues, TRANSIT project aimed to provide innovative training to professionals from different professional categories (health and legal sector) who provide care to LGBTQ+ people in various capacities. Through the creation of an innovative training model and subsequently the realisation of training courses for health and legal professionals (direct target group), the following objectives were to be achieved: - To increase the knowledge and skills of health and legal professionals on LGBTQ+ issue; - To increase the relational and empathic skills of the target professionals; - To establish units of evaluable and exploitable learning outcomes; - To reduce secondary victimization, prejudices, stereotypes and discrimination towards LGBTQ +; - To improve the quality of care in LGBTQ+ services.

Background

Protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ people is a priority of the European Union. In 2020 FRA presented the second survey on LGBTI people in the EU. The results show little progress but the discrimination in everyday life persists. Harassment and physical and sexual attacks also remain concerns. In the health sector, the relationship with public services remains problematic for LGBTQ+ people. There is a strong lack of services able to offer adequate care. Professionals often state that they do not feel comfortable interacting with LGBTQ+ people because they have not received any training on the subject and often provide care based on implicit prejudices and tactless stereotypes. Working with LGBTQ+ people requires specific clinical skills that educational institutions and training centres marginally provide. Also in the legal field, judges and lawyers are unable to protect them from discrimination and violence in their life contexts and to adequately follow, for example, transgender people, because they are not adequately trained and updated on LGBTQ+ issues. So, in order to promote true inclusion of LGBTQ+ people, it is crucial to break down barriers and improve access and quality of both health and legal services.
