Objectives

The main objective of the S.O.S. project was to exchange good practices among four EU organizations to create forward-looking local learning centers aimed at enhancing the social inclusion of fragile adults—such as women in prison, people with a history of addiction and women with migratory backgrounds. By involving them in community education on sustainability, we aimed to foster both empowerment and reintegration. Through the co-design of inclusive non-formal learning environments, we sought to strengthen European cooperation and enhance staff skills in adult education. The project also aimed to raise awareness on the environmental, economic, and social dimensions of sustainability, in line with the 2030 Agenda. By focusing on sustainable food, mobility, and tourism, participants not only developed key green skills but also engaged their local communities through awareness-raising and peer education. Ultimately, the goal was to build inclusive, low-threshold educational spaces that promote active citizenship, equity, and environmental consciousness, while reinforcing the professional and social reintegration of vulnerable groups.

Background

We applied for the SOS project to respond to the urgent environmental, economic, and social crises impacting our globalized world—especially their disproportionate effects on marginalized groups. Our goal has been to promote inclusion by involving disadvantaged adults in the training on 3 specific themes: sustainable tourism, eating and mobility. SOS addressed the need for social inclusion of subjects at risk of marginalization for accessible, non-formal learning environments that empower them with green and life skills to improve employability and resilience. It supported our organizations’ missions of reintegration, lifelong learning, and social inclusion, and offered a platform to exchange best practices in sustainability and professional inclusion across Europe. By enabling participants to become both learners and educators in their communities, we were able to foster long-term personal growth, active citizenship, and a stronger sense of European belonging. Moreover, SOS met the needs of our organizations by strengthening our capacity to support social and professional reintegration, reduce marginalization, and promote equity and diversity.
