Objectives

The vision of the Zonta movement is a world in which women's rights are recognized as human rights and every woman is able to achieve her full potential and a world where no woman lives in fear of violence. However, women still face discrimination, violations of women's rights and even violence. However, women still face discrimination, violations of women's rights and even violence. Often women are silent about it. They are ashamed, afraid and do not know where to ask for advice or help. Society is also often silent on the subject of violence until something horrific happens. Therefore, with the help of this project, the project partners wanted to find and try a new way to encourage women to speak about violations of women's rights, discrimination or violence, as well as to increase public awareness of this problem. Of course, the partners also wanted to build the capacity of their organizations, both by supplementing and/or strengthening knowledge about violence issues, and by creating a methodological base for further activities to strengthen and support women's self-confidence. The third goal within the project was cooperation with local institutions involved in eliminating the consequences of violence or mitigating violence.

Background

Violence against women in Latvia, as well as elsewhere in the world, is a serious problem that affects many lives. It can take many forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, economic or cyber abuse. Although several laws have been adopted in Latvia to protect women against violence, and Latvia has also joined international documents such as the Istanbul Convention, various measures have been taken and support services have been established for victims, offering both immediate physical shelter and legal and psychological support, however, women still face violence in the workplace, in the family and in public places. Often the problem is that women are not even aware that their rights have been violated and that violence has been practiced against them. On the other hand, in other cases, women are ashamed, afraid and do not know where to ask for help. In order to reduce violence against women and promote a safer world for women and girls, which is one of the main objectives of the Zonta Movement, educational and public awareness-raising activities are needed to raise awareness of the problem and encourage women to report incidents of violence, strengthen women's skills to confront violence and encourage them to remain silent.
