Objectives

“EQUAL” is a youth exchange project initiated by youths from St. Maarten, Bulgaria, Malta, Turkey, Netherlands and Croatia. This project included one mobility /youth exchange/, in St. Maarten, involving a variety of non-formal educational activities, discussions and visits. The principles of equality and inclusion are among the core values of The European Union. At the same time, societies are becoming more diverse in many ways especially relationships. This leads to a greater need to learn to comply diversity and to create inclusive and cohesive societies in Europe. In view of the current European migration crisis, intolerance and racial discrimination in Europe has drastically increased caused by the situation in Ukraine. The exchange aims to identify the common causes of intolerance and analyze persisting cases of non-tolerance on the basis of culture, religion, gender, sexual orientation and race against various minorities, formulate good practices in order to reduce it, as well as strategies, which could help increase tolerance toward minorities in the participant countries and beyond. St. Maarten is an island with over 125 different nationalities which tries to exercise gender equality. We are an example of migration in the Caribbean, which is why this project will be very important to us. St. Maarten has been a thriving economical pillar within the Caribbean region for many with many advantages such as its strategic location, An oversea European territory, dollarization, vast employment opportunities and gateway to the Americas. St. Maarten currently has more than 70% of its population either foreigners or nationals of foreigners residing within the country. Immigration has been one of the biggest challenges within the country and due to that it has raised many concerns such as: Racial discrimination Poverty Bullying Under-privileged communities Un-educated youngsters Gang violence's/ gang members Drug related issues Alcoholic abuse Parentless children Neglected children St. Maarten has been trying to manage its immigration issues for quite some time now and has never sought to address the issues of migration on an international or global scale. Many people who have migrated to St. Maarten is searching for a better life and a better opportunity to have a decent way of life. Because of the economic opportunities in St. Maarten. Many migrants from all over the world have flock to St. Maarten to explore employment and business opportunities. As recorded, the country has approximately 126 out of 189 different nationalities in the world which makes us one of the melting pots of the world. Because of this, many issues have been faced throughout the various communities on migration issues. The specific objectives of this project are: - To increase awareness among young people from a minority background (cultural, ethnic, etc.) on European citizenship. - To empower youth to take an active role in local communities. - To create space for dialogue. - To bring together young people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. - To foster their feeling of sharing common values. - To raise their sense of belonging to Europe. Through this project we target the following Erasmus+ objective: "Promote non-formal and informal learning mobility and active participation among young people, as well as cooperation, quality, inclusion, creativity and innovation at the level of organizations and policies in the field of youth. Other specific objectives, listed under the Mobility Project for young people, that are targeted under this project include: - a work programme, having a mix of activities, designed and prepared by youths. - the development of competences, especially those related to communication, leadership skills and time management. - socially relevant topics, especially those related to discrimination, intolerances and bullying. - discover new cultures, not only the one we will be visiting but also from all participating countries. - strengthen the values of solidarity and friendship. - the programme of activities is based on non-formal education. Issues and needs that are being addressed: During the youth exchange we discussed important issues that one way or another we are all affected by the behaviors of others. We might face discrimination because of racism, disabilities, health problems, different religious views, appearance, sexual orientation, gender, etc... We learned more how to be instrumental for more inclusive societies, starting from our own communities and also how to seek help if we feel we are being discriminated.
