Objectives

Racist and xenophobic sentiment, violence and discrimination have increased dramatically with the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Human Rights Watch. On May 8, 2020, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that "the pandemic continues to spread a tsunami of hatred and xenophobia, resulting in new scapegoats and an increase in hate speech" and called on governments to "act now to strengthen the immunity of our societies against the virus of hate." More than 2 years later, COVID-19-related hate speech against religious and ethnic groups is still on the rise as the world faces new waves of coronavirus cases. Even before the pandemic, marginalized groups of young people are even more vulnerable to hate speech, online harassment, violence and discrimination, which increases the risks of social exclusion, youth radicalization. Steps 4 HR Protection was created by an international group of young people who identified the common challenges faced by young people in Europe during a pandemic. Young people not only experience discrimination, cyber bullying and hatred almost daily all around internet, but usually are not aware how to approach and stand up for their own and others human rights.‘ Steps 4 Human Right Protection is a respond to the increasing discriminatory behavior, cyber bullying towards minority groups especially during the Covid19 pandemic.Trough the participatory theatre approaches we aimed to tackle the issues of Human rights violations and empower youth to stand up for those rights.Thee groups had the chance to explore and understand better human rights, the reasons and effect of discrimination, to understand what hate speech and social insjustice are,but most of all they got empowered to not be only audience but spectators. The power of theater as a way for people and communities to share their experiences, generate conversation, and enable new insights to emerge;is also an ideal instrument to give witness to human rights violations;for education and awareness raising and most of all for empowering people to stand up for human rights. . The main objectives of the project were - To provide understanding and awareness among young people about Human rights and human rights violations -To encourage understanding and knowledge of youth about discrimination, hate speech and cyberbullying as human rights violations -To present Participatory theatre methodology as a way for youth to get engaged and stand up for human rights -to empower young people to tackle human rights violations trough particicipatory approach
