Objectives

The Clickbait project emerged from the vision of a group of passionate young individuals seeking to cultivate a culture of critical thinking and information filtering. With the rapid expansion of the Internet as the primary source of information, we recognized the urgent need to counter the rampant spread of unverified and misleading news on social media platforms. As these platforms have become the go-to channels for accessing information, they are also rife with fake news, often designed to misinform rather than enlighten. Our motivation for embarking on this project stemmed from our daily encounters with fake news on social media and the realisation that young people, who constitute the majority of social media users, lacked the necessary skills to discern credible information from deceptive content. Consequently, many individuals unwittingly perpetuated disinformation by sharing fake news with their friends and families. Understanding the significance of empowering young people with effective information-filtering techniques, we took a proactive stance in formulating a strategy to combat social media manipulations. Leveraging the collaborative partnerships established during previous Erasmus+ projects, we united proactive youths from the Netherlands, Armenia, Moldova, Lithuania, Ukraine, Poland, Turkey, and Georgia. Through the exchange of diverse perspectives and best practices, we aimed to develop innovative solutions to address the pervasive issue of fake news on social media. We firmly believe in the power of education, especially non-formal education, as a potent tool for countering misinformation. By imparting knowledge on identifying and verifying reliable sources, we aspire to extend the reach of critical thinking far beyond the project's immediate participants. Notably, the implementation of the Clickbait project coincided with the backdrop of russian aggression in Ukraine, adding a poignant practical dimension to the importance of social media literacy. This context reinforced our commitment to equipping young people with the skills needed to navigate the digital landscape responsibly and to be discerning consumers of information. In conclusion, Clickbait represents a concerted effort by enthusiastic young minds to foster a movement of critical thinking and information filtering. By empowering young individuals with the tools to navigate the complexities of the digital age, we endeavor to create a more informed and responsible online community, better equipped to combat the proliferation of fake news on social media. The main goal of the project was to develop an innovative and engaging method to educate young people about social media literacy and the application of critical thinking to the information they receive. We planned to set up a self organised, open-minded, and creative environment for 40 participants from 8 European countries to cooperate in pursuit of the following project objectives: 1. Improving 40 participants' critical thinking skills and ability to deal with fakes on social media. 2. Raising participants` personal awareness and knowledge about critical thinking and data analysis. 3. Exchanging challenges and best practices in dealing with disinformation and fake news on social media in 8 participating countries. 4. Learning through numerous workshops and non-formal learning about manipulation techniques and resilience to them. 5. Planning and launching at least 4 online follow-up campaigns to promote social media literacy among young people in Europe. 6. Exploring the opportunities of the Erasmus+ programme and generating new creative project ideas.
